Jay was a rare person , a keen and insightful collector of important
items of provenance, and a gentleman. It was always a pleasure to
sell him a book, painting, &c, because you knew that it was going to
a person who fully understood its importance, and, what's more, its

Jay Fliegelman, collector of early American association copies and
professor of American Literature at Stanford University, died on
August 14. His knowledge was comprehensive; he could immediately
discover the excitement, if any, in an association and didn't need a
