I am sorry to let the list know that our world has lost a bright
spirit and a great friend of books - Jay Fliegelman, Coe Professor of
American Literature at Stanford. Jay loved books, and finding books
and sharing books and showing books. His joy was the association
copy, which he delighted in as literary scholar, historical and
cultural scholar, traditional bibliophile, teacher - the epitome of well-informed appreciation and often jubilant
curiosity, when he held in his hands such a volume to work and play with.

Jay let us know of his illness in a brief brave note in May that
included the line, "So I am basically closing down my collection, unless you have
something truly phenomenal."
That last clause - how absolutely, how vividly, how heartbreakingly Jay!
His memory, work, and influence will live on. How I wish we could simply have had
HIM with us, longer!
