Re: ESTC citation CONFUSION

Yes, this is exactly right. The new form is clear and elegant. Thanks
to Deborah for explaining the letter prefaces, which are integral to
the citation.

John Overholt is quite correct. After extensive discussion on DCRM-L, a
consensus was reached that after the move of the ESTC file to the
British Library, the standard citation form would be: ESTC <number>,
with the number being preceded by its associated letter: N, R, S, T, or
W. The next revision of _Standard Citation Forms for Special Collections
Cataloging_ will include the new form, according to Elizabeth Robinson
of LC.

For the curious, the letter prefaces have specific meanings:

N=18c records created by the North American editorial office (first at
Louisiana State University, then at the University of California,
Riverside)
T= 18c records created by the British editorial office (always at the
British Library)
W=records for American imprints created by the North American Imprints
Program (NAIP) at the American Antiquarian Society
R=Wing records (originating editorial center not indicated)
S=STC records (originating editorial center not indicated)

The third is the standard. We've discussed this extensively on the DCRB listserv, ultimately deciding to abandon any qualifier (I hope I'm remembering correctly; if not, I'm sure Deborah Leslie will correct me):
