I'm trying to narrow down the possible date of manufacture for a piece of
paper watermarked "MBM France". This is Arches "handmade" (cylinder
machine) paper, of course. There is slight evidence that points to about
1901 as the date of use, although the paper could be somewhat older. The
suspected printer was still around until the 1920s, and may have used it
that late. Would the presence of "France" in the watermark indicate a date
after 1891 when country of origin was required on some products being
imported into the US, or did Arches paper include "France" at an earlier
date? My meager water mark references are no help (nor google), and with
paper coming out of Arches since the beginning of time I have no idea how
old this paper might be, although my guess is late 19th century. Any clues
or nods in the direction of a good reference would be much appreciated.
