Re: Silva of North America pub date

Our volumes 1 and 2 have MDCCCXCI (1891) on the t.p. ... and then the
subsequent volumes have dates that string out to MDCCCCII (1902) in vols
13 and 14.

Now, can I complicate things for you? Our vol. 13 has a page with a 12
line "Note" on the un-numbered leaf in between the dedication and the
table of contents. This note begins: "The first volume of this work was
issued in October, 1890."

Enjoy!

Subject: [EXLIBRIS-L] Silva of North America pub date

Hi there,
I am working on a record for Sargent's "Silva of North America"
(1891/1892-1902) and there seems to be
a discrepancy regarding the date of publication on the t.p. and the date
as recorded
in most records and biblio descriptions. The t.p. has MDCCCXCII in the
imprint (c1890 t.p. verso)
but most records and descriptions have the date listed as 1891. I can't
find anything in the 1st vol.
(or any of the other 13 v.) that indicates this date (explicitly or
implicitly). Can someone enlighten me
as to why 1891 seems to be the accepted date of publication vs. 1892.

Thanks,
Silvana
