List 27: A short list of 97 American and Continental works concerning
Tactics, Weapons, Ordnance, Fortifications, Uniforms, Military
Manuals, and related items published before, during, and shortly
after the Civil War from the Library of the Military Order of the
Loyal Legion of the United States, Commandery of the State of
Illinois. The early items, such as Gay de Vernon's "Traite
elementaire d'art militaire et de fortification" (volume II only),
which was the standard military manual at West Point from 1818 until
1830 or Tielke's "The Field Engineer; or Instructions upon every
Branch of Field Fortification" which was popular among American
Officers, influenced the tactics and strategy of the war. During the
war itself, Viele's "Handbook for Active Service containing Practical
Instructions in Campaign Duties. For the Use of Volunteers" and
Buckholtz' "Tactics for Officers of Infantry, Cavalry and Artillery"
(Richmond 1861) helped volunteers through their demanding tasks.
Immediately after the War until the turn of the century, America's
new concern with an overhaul of its military can be found in such
works as Norton's "Report to the Government of the United States on
the Munitions of War exhibited at the Paris Universal Exhibition,
1867," Whittaker's "Volunteer Cavalry. The Lessons of the Decade,"
Upton's "The Armies of Asia and Europe: embracing Official
Reports..." and the over four hundred "Ordnance Notes" that poured
out from the Ordnance Office in the 1880's.
