I have just acquired a book that has detachable corners. What I mean is that
each of the corners of the front and back cover at the head and tail is
covered with a cardboard cover that looks like the corner of a half-binding,
but the cardboard corners are detachable. To further the appearance of a
half-binding, the cardboard material is colored off-white, like vellum. The
corners secure in place a thin paper jacket that is wrappered around the
cloth-covered boards of the case. The outside of each cardboard corner is
stamped: "Manufactured by WAY & RANKIN 588 Halsey St. Brooklyn, N.Y."
The book is a proverbial slim volume of poetry, _Stray Verses_, by Andrew
Fleming West (Princeton: Princeton University Press, 1931). The thin paper
jacket wrappered around the cloth-covered boards of the case is printed.
Interestingly, the author has written his presentation inscription on the
thin paper jacket.
Has anyone seen this or another such arrangement? I haven't seen any other
such.
