About Hélène Francoeur

Hélène Francoeur took her first bookbinding lessons from Léon Gamache at
his bindery in Chicoutimi, Québec, in 1985. In 1992 she opened her own
bindery in Québec City. Mostly self taught during the first years, she went
on to a more formal scholarship with masters from Montréal, Toronto and the
United States. Her bindings were seen at many exhibitions, in Québec,
Canada and Europe, and most of all in the "Une passion à quatre mains"
exhibition held in Montréal (1998) and Québec (1999). The National Library
of Canada commissioned its Livre d’Or from her. She won the William
Cowley Award for Fine Binding in 1998 (Canadian Bookbinders and Book
Artists Guild).

She is known for the way she respects the book’s mechanism and
especially for her capacity to reflect the book’s subject in a very
simple but highly representative décor, incorporating elements of a
whimsical and joyful nature.

She is interested in decorated papers and does her own pasted papers as
well as suminagashi.

Bookbinding brought her into fine press printing which she learnt in 1997.
She owns a small platen press. She is also a member in various bookbinding
associations, head of a bookbinding researcgh group (Québec), teacher at
the bookbinding school of Québec, all this in the hope of promoting a craft
and art form which she believes in.
