GBW Email List FAQ
and Archives

The GBW email list was founded in October, 1999 to:

  • Foster an open dialog between Guild members on issues of importance to the Guild as a whole
  • Exchange technical information
  • Notices of new publications, workshops, exhibits...

The GBW email list is open to all GBW members in good standing. To subscribe, see the instructions below. Also, please read the very important information about the use of this list and what happens to your postings once you click "Send."

Email List Instructions

All members in good standing of the Guild of Book Workers may join the GBW email list.

All requests to join the email list are sent to the "listowner" (i.e. the GBW Communications Chair), who checks on your membership status. This process may take just a few minutes or a few days depending on when you put in your request. Please be patient but email the Communications Chair if you have not heard anything after 3 business days.

To join the email list or change your subscription options, go the GBW email list subscription page. This is a web-based interface, so you do not need to send any commands via email to make changes in your subscription options.

To join the list, you need a valid email address. You can also choose your own password or let the server choose one for you.

To change your subscription options, including the email address you want messages sent to, you will need your password, which was mailed to you in the Welcome Message you received when you first signed up. If you have forgotten your password, you can have it emailed to your subscription address from this page as well.

If you have difficulties establishing your subscription, please do let the listowner know. We are happy to help all GBW members join the email list.

To send a message (i.e. post) to the email list, send your email message to:
GBW@mailman.lib.msu.edu

A few general rules for posting:

  • You must be subscribed to post. And you must post from the email account you subscribed from. If you have more than one email account, make sure you know which one you are subscribed with! This is especially important if you have more than one user account with the same domain name (i.e. <me@domain.com> and <you@domain.com> are two different email accounts to the email list).
  • Do not send email list commands to the list. They will not be processed but will annoy other list members. All subscription options can be changed via your web browser at mailman.lib.msu.edu/mailman/listinfo/gbw
  • If you have any questions about how to change your subscription options or how the email list works in general, do not send a message to the list! Please ask the listowner directly at gbwlist@guildofbookworkers.allmail.net.

Very Important Information

The following are specific to the GBW email list, but are generally good "netiquette" rules to follow:

  • Please stay on topic. The accepted topics on the GBW email list include information and business about the organization, technical information related to the book arts (tips, tricks, questions, queries, etc.), and announcements about workshops, exhibits, publications or anything dealing with the book arts.
  • Be at least civil, if you can't be friendly, in your posts and replies. Virulent, personal, attacks of any kind will not be tolerated. Habitual offenders will be removed. Remeber, sometimes humor, especially of the sarcastic kind, does not translate well in email.
  • You are responsible for all postings made by you, or from your account. Please think before you post anything inflammatory which you may regret later. If it's confidential, do not send.
  • This is not a list to talk about politics, religion or other subjects of a "personal" interest. Unless a bookbinder runs for president, just don't go there.
  • Avoid unnecessary replies to the entire list, such as "me too" or just a "yes." Do not copy and paste an entire message if it is not necessary, especially a long message.
  • Keep replies on the list so all members may join in on the discussion and learn from each other. Unless, of course, your reply becomes personal.
  • And speaking of personal, pay attention to whom you are sending the email message. Always check the "To:" field before you click "Send." Misdirected messages are a source of amusement to list members and can be embarassing, or worse, to you. (The story about the person sending rude comments about her boss to a email list her boss also read is not just an urban legend!) Please do not to admonish the offender (that's the listowners job). We all make mistakes. Let's just try not to make a habit of it.
  • Please include your name and affiliation (if any) in your message for identification, as email header addresses are often unhelpful. Ask your local guru about "signature files," which automates this function.
  • All postings are automatically archived on the GBW website. Once in the Archive they CANNOT be removed! Individuals retain copyright on their messages, but all posts should be thought of as a publication in the GBW email list and its Archive.
  • In order to protect the privacy of subscribers, no membership information is made public, though the identity of subscribers and their email addresses will become part of the permanent record in the list archive, which is available to the public.
