When confusion reigns over descriptions by advertisers or quoters, dissatisfaction is the inevitable result. In an effort to promote agreement between buyer and seller in the descriptions used for the condition of books, AB first proposed in 1949 a set of terms that could serve as a standard in catalogue and mail-order transactions. A revised list of terms used in describing books follows as a suggested guide and reference for all book people"
